GCSE Tuition

Tutoring at GCSE level will focus on developing all skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing, with emphasis on developing spontaneity in spoken French. Speaking practice will incorporate lots of questioning and answering on the topics studied and will help to develop your confidence, as well as build on accuracy and learning how to use impressive grammatical structures (if requested !). I have many years of experience conducting the speaking examination in May each year and I really know what the examiner requires in order to award  the student a top grade (level 7-9)

Writing will also be an area of concentration, with emphasis on accuracy, understanding the different tenses required and how to use the more complex grammatical structures needed for the top grades.  Revision of some of the topics may also be needed and I have a wealth of resources to help students. I will also focus on improving comprehension, particularly listening, which can be a difficult skill to master.

A level Tuition

Tutoring at A level will focus on developing spontaneity and increase confidence in delivering longer spoken answers to the topics studied in the syllabus. There will be a greater focus on accuracy, both in  spoken and written work and on incorporating the higher level grammatical structures. Some grammar practice may be needed, as an excellent grasp of the past tense is required at A level along with the subjunctive, pluperfect, conditional perfect tenses and indirect object pronouns.

I am also experienced in helping students with their Individual Research Project (IRP) for the A level speaking examination and can suggest areas of interest, check and listen to your two minute presentation and help develop your research to the level required for a top grade.  I have also conducted A level speaking examinations for many years and so know how to achieve the marks, both with the speaking cards on the topics and with the IRP.

From my 20 years’ experience teaching French at GCSE and A level at Poole Grammar School, I have a vast bank of resources in speaking, listening, reading, and writing to assist understanding and extend your capabilities, ultimately helping you achieve the grade you both deserve and often require for your chosen university.

I can tutor on a 1-1 basis or equally in groups of up to four GCSE students (GCSE) or two A level students (A level).

You are very welcome to come to my house in Poole for tutoring or I can travel to you, but there will be a supplement of £5 for this.
